The Phi Centre in association with DHC/ART Foundation for Contemporary Art is pleased to present test pattern. A live set that puts forth a stark and powerful, highly synchronized soundtrack along with an intense display of flickering black and white imagery that floats and convulses in the darkness. test pattern is also a real-time computer program that converts Ikeda’s audio signal patterns into tightly corresponding barcode patterns presented on-screen. The ultra-fast speed of the changing images, which is some hundreds of frames per second, provides a performance test for the audio and visual devices, as well as a response test for the audience’s threshold of perception. The result is a fascinating and physical experience. This project is part of Ryoji Ikeda’s datamatics series that explores the potential to perceive the invisible multi-substance of data that permeates our world.
